Back in 2016, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) updated their regulations and opened a whole new path for drone professionals. The Part 107 Small UAS Rule created the nationโs first true โdrone licenseโ and created a new industry of professionals who use drones to do things like real estate photography, inspections, filmmaking, land surveys, mapping/modeling, and so much more.
Drones have now become critical tools in a wide variety of (non-military) industries. They're used to save time, to save money, and even to save lives.
This course prepares students to get their drone license, officially known as a Remote Pilot Certificate, and to become workforce-ready drone pilots.
Understanding these regulations prepares students to work legally on paid projects. Even if some of your students never take the FAA exam, this curriculum still opens doors to multidisciplinary topics: aerodynamics and physics, geospatial literacy, meteorology, decision-making, project management, entrepreneurial thinking, and aviation history.
And beyond test prep, we've added real-world flight skills lessons in topics like airspace research and mission planning, basic drone flying, and advanced flight modes.
There's also a final workforce development module that highlights drones in specific industries, including starting an aerial services business.
Because it's not just about passing an exam. It's about preparing students for real job opportunities and building confidence with real-world scenarios and opportunities.
Course Mechanics at a Glance
- 13 Total Modules โ Part 107 test prep curriculum (9 modules) + flight skills curriculum (3 modules) + 'beyond Part 107' industry lessons (1 module). Modules contain lessons of a particular theme (e.g., Regulations, Airspace, Weather).
- Lessons inside each module โ short video + full transcript of the video + auto-graded quiz with answer explanations. Flipped-classroom friendly; quizzes give instant checks for understanding.
- Graded Knowledge Checks and Practice Tests โ available at the end of every module; educator can use real-time dashboard to check up on student progress.
- Teacher Notes โ key talking points, common misconceptions, and quick-reference notes. Saves prep time and spotlights likely stumbling blocks.
- Classroom Resources โ bank of 30-45 minute, classroom activities. Reinforces concepts, sparks discussion, fits STEM and career-tech tracks.
Timeline Options
High-school programs tend to adopt our drone curriculum in five distinct ways. Each use case below includes a pacing outline that you can work into your syllabus and adjust for holidays or testing blocks.
- Semester-Long Elective (18 weeks) โ typical schedule is 3-5 x 45 min periods/week. You can comfortably get through one module every two weeks.
- Quarter / Trimester CTE (9 weeks) โ typical schedule is 90 min block every other day. You can comfortably get through 1-2 modules every two weeks.๏ปฟ
- Exploratory Mini-Unit (3โ4 weeks inside Physics/Tech) โ FAA exam optional, can focus on specific modules (2, 4, 7, 8) and can flip the learning and ask students to go through videos and lessons before each club
- After-School / Drone Club (8 sessions) โ weekly 60-90 min meetings, consider including a flight skills or photo contest if you have access to a drone.
- Summer Boot Camp (10 full days) โ one module per day, with a full-length practice test on day 9-10. Can include guest speaker slots and integrate local drone businesses, FAAST team members, etc.
๐ก Choosing a Path: Pick the model that best matches your school's schedule and facility access. You can always slow the pace by adding extra flight sessions if you have access to a drone, or speed it up by assigning videos as homework. Tips for Custom Pacing
- Blend in flight labs. Reserve at least one โfield periodโ per module so students can connect regs and theory to stick-time.
- Leverage Classroom Resources on block days. They fill a 45โ60 min slot without extra prep.
- Differentiate for mixed goals. Students not aiming for the exam can skip the final cram module and instead showcase a project that demonstrates safe-flight planning and execution.
๐ก Part 107 is a starting point. Throughout this curriculum, encourage students to think of the certificate as a passport to fields like engineering, GIS, cinematography, environmental science, and emergency response.
